On my Wired doorbell, the tab on the mounting plate isn't a solid piece. There is a hole in the center of it to allow the release tool to access the spring loaded locking tab on the doorbell. That's what pushes down and engages the tab on the mounting plate. Don't know how you would have punched a hole through the locking tab.
