History of the Divine 9 Black Greek Fraternities and Sororities. There are nine black sororities and fraternities which make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Founded in 1930 at Howard University, the purpose of the Council was to foster cooperative actions of its members in dealing with matters of mutual concern.The irony in 1913 was overwhelming. The White women who organized the Woman Suffrage Procession, which attracted thousands to protest for the right to vote, advocated for a supremacist symbol of their priorities; Black women could march — but they had to bring up the rear.
