Normally, you can start in gear if the clutch is pulled in. There is a switch on the clutch handle that looks after this. Could be out of adjustment, dirty, no good, etc. Give it a looksee. On the 1500, the service manul says a special tool is need to pull the spark plug tubes, but you can fashion a tool out of the rear axle nut and unscrew the tube. I'd bet the 800 is similar.
