Early on in fifth edition, there were two (and a half, I’m not really counting arcane trickster) options for gish characters: Eldritch Knights and Bladesingers.Bladesinger basically adds the ability to be a frontline a few times a day with moderately high consistent dps to the already formidable damage and ability of a standard wizard. You'll generally get more damage by leveling wizard and getting to your higher level wizard spells faster than by delaying your spell progression to go artificer.
